ORIENTATION FOR YOUNG DOCTOR CANDIDATES: FK UMS, 41st COHORT, FEBRUARY 2026

Emphasizing Service Quality, Patient Safety, and Mental Readiness

The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (FK UMS), held an Orientation Program for Young Doctor Candidates (Koas), 41st Cohort, in February 2026. The program took place in stages from February 11 to 20, 2026, at FK UMS and RSUD Dr. Harjono S Ponorogo, involving various affiliated teaching hospitals.

The orientation aimed to comprehensively prepare students for entering the medical professional education phase, covering academic aspects, professionalism, patient safety, and mental readiness.

During the internal sessions at FK UMS held on February 11–12, 2026, students received reinforcement on the medical professional education curriculum, academic activities, and the Young Doctor administrative system. The material was delivered by FK UMS leadership and faculty members.

In addition, participants received briefings on Student Safety and Patient Safety, Young Doctor counseling, as well as Young Doctor ethics and code of conduct. The sessions also covered teaching and learning evaluation, EDOM (lecturer evaluation by students), AIK (Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan), logbook guidelines, and IPE (Interprofessional Education) reporting.

Moving into the teaching hospital orientation phase, on Friday, February 13, 2026, RSUD Dr. Harjono S Ponorogo provided reinforcement on hospital standards. The Director of RSUD dr. Harjono S Ponorogo opened the session with an introduction to Hospital Accreditation Standards (STARKES) and the Integration of Health Education in Hospital Services (IPKP).

Other topics covered included quality and patient safety programs, mental readiness for entering professional education, and the Infection Prevention and Control (PPI) program. During the PPI session, participants were briefed on the fundamentals of infection control, the use of medical equipment and disposable materials, infectious waste management, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE levels 1–3), hand hygiene, and infection risks. Video demonstrations on donning and doffing PPE further strengthened participants’ practical understanding.

Reinforcement of patient safety goals was also a key focus, covering correct patient identification, effective communication, high-risk medication safety, surgical site and procedure verification, prevention of healthcare-associated infections, and fall risk prevention.

Additionally, participants received training on Basic Life Support (BLS), medication safety programs including NORUM (look-alike) and LASA (look-alike, sound-alike) drugs, as well as an introduction to the Education Coordination Committee (KOMKORDIK).

The program continued on February 19, 2026, at FK UMS with fire safety material delivered by the Training Division of RSU Pusat Surakarta, including demonstrations on the use of fire extinguishers and evacuation routes. The Code Blue Team from RS PKU Muhammadiyah Surakarta provided a Basic Life Support (BLS) refresher.

The mental health of healthcare workers in the COVID-19 era also received attention through a session by RSJD Surakarta addressing the prevention of anxiety, sleep disorders, and depression among healthcare workers.

On the final day, Friday, February 20, 2026, participants took part in a session on self-reflection (muhasabah), effort (ikhtiar), and trust in God (tawakal) in undertaking professional education, delivered by RSUD Magetan. Medical ethics material was also presented, covering ethical conduct between physicians and colleagues as well as patients, social media ethics for medical professionals, and the confidentiality of patient medical records. The program concluded with a session on Counseling, Information, and Education at healthcare facilities, delivered by the Director of RSUD Sukoharjo.

Through this orientation series, FK UMS hopes that Young Doctor candidates will possess academic, professional, and mental readiness, along with a strong commitment to service quality and patient safety before entering clinical education at affiliated hospitals.
