Outstanding achievement has been accomplished by two female medical students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta in a national-level scientific competition. Ainun Ni’mah Syawaliyah (class of 2023) and Aswa Arsa Kumala (class of 2022) successfully secured first place in the literature review competition at the Jenderal Ahmad Yani Scientific Competition (JAYSCO) 2025. This prestigious competition was conducted virtually via Zoom Meeting platform over two days, September 27-28, 2025. Their victory was closely connected to the innovative research topic they chose to explore.
Their research addressed cutting-edge themes regarding genetic polymorphism in personalized diabetes therapy. The work entitled “Decoding Transcription Factor Seven Like Two Polymorphism: Clinical Implications for Personalized Antidiabetic Therapy” explored the crucial role of the TCF7L2 gene, particularly the genetic variant rs7903146. A comprehensive study of ten research papers revealed that individuals carrying the T allele demonstrate higher risks of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, exhibit suboptimal responses to sulfonylurea therapy, and tend to experience earlier treatment failure. However, incretin-based therapy showed superior effectiveness in this genetic group, paving the way for treatment approaches tailored to individual genetic profiles. The depth of their research substance received remarkable reception from experts in the field.
The scientific quality of both students’ work received extraordinary recognition from the jury panel. During the final session, one jury member provided high appreciation by stating that their literature review had reached publication standards with minimal additional refinement. This acknowledgment proves that FK UMS students are capable of producing research that meets national scientific publication quality. Behind this success lies an interesting story about how this winning team was formed.
Cross-generational collaboration became the key to this remarkable achievement. Aswa, who holds the title of Outstanding Student 1 at FK UMS, initiated the invitation for her junior Ainun to participate in this prestigious competition. Aswa’s strategic approach aimed to create opportunities for underclassmen to build exceptional achievement portfolios. Ainun responded enthusiastically, even taking the team leader position to ensure her name would be listed as the first author when the work gets published. What was astonishing was the remarkably short time they needed to achieve this accomplishment.
This spectacular accomplishment materialized despite being completed within extremely limited time constraints. In just one week, both students managed to compose work capable of reaching the highest national competition level. This victory represents not merely individual triumph, but demonstrates the power of intergenerational academic synergy. Moreover, Ainun and Aswa’s achievement serves as concrete evidence that FK UMS students can transform campus potential into tangible contributions on the national scientific stage, while offering hope for medical research advancement, particularly in realizing personalized diabetes therapy.
